A word to the dead - Pushkara
I went for a Odia movie today called Pushkara. Leaving the flaws aside that the movie was way too slow and that I had a constant wish to have a remote to fast forward it many a times, the message that the movie had to give was profound. It's not a movie that'll leave you with a happy ending, but will give a reflection to reality.
Some insights from the movie -
- We never really express our love to people, assuming that people are immortal and will stay with us forever. We turn a blind eye to anything that could go wrong. The thought of a bed of roses is more soothing than the possibility of a path laid with thorns.
- Life goes on for a significant while, but death happens in a whiff. But, the suddenness of it, doesn't make it unpredictable and sad. It's the blind eye that made it so. It is always knocking the door, to remind us of the present. But, if we're too scared to face death and hence life.
- love is an illusion. And that illusion can instill either a deep sense of calmness or madness.
- Pushkara is a concept wherein, in case of an untimely death / death at an unauspiscious time, a person (ranked Pushkara) assumes the role of the deceased for a day. He is treated as a living form of the dead. The loved one's are allowed to meet Pushkara one at a time and open their heart for one last time. They express all their guilt and feeling that would otherwise remain repressed. As per the tradition, it's meant to relieve the family of Dosha (which according to me is symbolic to the unsettled emotions). It sometimes take a life time and even death to get over the guilt of these unsettled emotions. Some traditions are truly profund and this is one of them I feel. Of course, the better alternative would have been to truly express while the life exists
- While the guy taking the role of Pushkara, lives death almost everyday, he is shattered by the death of his own father. It was a reminder that the knowledge of worldly affairs doesn't necessarily give me the wisdom to deal with the same.
Thanks for reading! And if you happen to watch the movie, let me know what's your thought! 😊
